Russian Salon Dog Standards

The Russian Salon Dog (Russkaya Salonnaya Sobaka) is a modern dog breed from Russia. [3]

Origin

In the early 21st century, a Moscow resident Ms. Yulia A. Lakatosh[1,3] started to cross-breed Yorkshire Terrier with Shih Tzu. Several other toy dogs, such as "long-haired toy terriers", were also included in creation of the new breed.[2,3] The first breed standard was published in 2013 by the Russian Kennel Federation.[1,2,3]

Appearance

The Russian Salon Dog is a small dog with erect, triangular ears, a short muzzle (the length being 1/3 of the length of the head), and a firm, compact body. The skull is round. The eyes are medium-sized, oval-shaped, and preferably dark. The small muzzle is usually black, but can also be brown or grey; light flesh coloured nose is accepted (although not desirable). Both the scissor and level bite are accepted. The chest is oval-shaped and deep. The tail is sickle-shaped. The height ranges from 18 to 28 cm and the weight from 1.8 to 3.5 kg.[1,3]

Coat

The coat is soft and straight and it should be as long as possible. The hair forms moustaches and a beard around the muzzle. The colour can be either solid or bicolor. The solid colour should be preferably red - shade ranging from fawn, wheaten, and golden to light red, dark red, and cognac - but also cream is accepted. Sable is accepted, but not desirable. The bicolour is always red and white, red ranging in same shades as in accepted solid colours. There might be a dark mask on the muzzle; however, that's not demanded.[1,3]

Temperament

The breed is affectionate, playful, and sociable. It is used solely as a companion dog.[1,3] It has also been described as obedient, balanced, clean, cheerful, and friendly towards other animals.[2,3]

Care

The coat does not shed. However, as it is very long, it needs treatment with a special shampoo to remain shiny and beautiful. It is recommended to wash the body hair every 2 to 3 weeks and the facial hair after every meal. The breed is well adapted to a small apartment and city life.[2,3]

GBYR will not register any Colorful Yorkie and Russian Salon Dog crosses. We are a purebred registry only. Colorful Yorkies and Russian Salon dog are two different breeds.
